As wildfires continue to rage in the wilderness west of Quesnel, for one couple the damage is already done and they have lost everything.

Gregg and Lucy Ross live just past Baezaeko Road and as the Plateau fire gathered strength and headed their way, the couple frantically tried to set up sprinklers to save their home and outbuildings, as well as equipment and personal belongings.

But the fire came too close and they had to flee for their lives with just the clothes on their backs.

As they headed to Quesnel, Gregg and Lucy knew their way of life was about to be swallowed up by the relentless flames.

Close family member Terry Boyd said they were devastated to learn their worst fears had come true.

“They lost their house, their tractor, snow machines, everything they needed for their trap line and ranch,” she said.

“They are one of the few full-time residents in that area.”

Terry heard about her relatives’ devastating news while travelling with her daughter, Destinee Boyd, and grandson Tyrell Boyd, who are hoop dancers and were attending the All Nations Gathering in Fort St. James.

Destinee, Royal Princess of the Lhtako Dene First Nation, and her nephew Tyrell, known as Little Brave Warrior, wanted to do something to help their relatives.

During Destinee and Tyrell’s performance, they put a blanket on the floor and gathered donations for Gregg and Lucy.

When Terry and the dancers returned to Quesnel, they were happy to hand over $300 to the couple who were moved to tears by the generosity and kindness of the donation.

Terry is hoping they can help raise more funds for Gregg and Lucy. Financial donations can be made at the Red Bluff Band Office, 1515 Arbutus Road.

This winter the couple will be staying at Fish Lake on West Fraser Road.

“They are not town people, they need to be back in the country where they are comfortable and can live the life they love,” Terry Boyd said with respect to her relatives’ future..
