Lee-Anne Chisholm is just adding the final details to a new mural in downtown Quesnel.

The large painting on the back of Petro Canada by Regency Chrysler celebrates the past of what once stood at the gas bar and convenience store.

According to a plaque located at the front of Petro Canada, the site was home to Quesnel’s first Municipal Hall and Fire Hall building, constructed shortly after incorporation in 1928.

“We thought if we could incorporate that would be great,” Chisholm said of her discussions with Petro Canada owner/operator Scott Steele.

Chisholm began looking at some photos of Carson Street and the old buildings.

“I also found some photos of this great 1928 fire truck, and I thought that’s got to be part of this mural,” she added.

Steele became interested in a mural after learning of potential funding opportunities for such projects by the City of Quesnel and had reached out to Chisholm.

As the mural nears completion, Steele said staff have been taking photos of its progress daily.

“I just didn’t like painting another plain white wall, and the fact that the city had this grant, I thought we’d paint something nice. It just brightens up the downtown core and is another reason for people to come down and see it,” Steele said. “I think it’s turned out phenomenal.”

Chisholm has been working on the mural off and on for the past month and hopes to have it finished in the coming days.

She has been painting murals for around ten years.

“If I can brighten up a wall, that’s what I like to do,” Chisholm said, noting the positive response.
