The Ministry of Education announced in a press release today that Quesnel’s grade 8 and 9 students will move to Maple Drive Junior School in March 2018.

The provincial government has pledged $1.7 million to the Quesnel School District to renovate the school, which currently houses a few businesses, including a daycare and a gymnastics club.

More than 400 students are expected to move from Quesnel Junior School (QJS) in North Quesnel to Maple Drive. Students who are currently bussed to QJS will be bussed to Maple Drive.

QJS, which was built in 1950, is in need of repair. Maple Drive was built in 1979 and was closed as a school 13 years ago.

The Ministry of Education release calls the move a temporary solution, which will allow the province and the district to investigate longer-term options for grade 8 and 9 students in Quesnel.

“Knowing students are in a safer building will allow staff to continue to focus on the programs that we know are making a difference in the achievement of our grade 8 and 9 students,” says Sue-Ellen Miller, superintendent of schools for the Quesnel School District.
