Quesnel RCMP have arrested a suspected car thief after tracking him with a police dog in North Quesnel.
This morning (Feb. 20) at 11:30 a patrolling officer observed a vehicle reported as stolen from Prince George, near G.R. Baker Memorial Hospital.
The driver noticed the officer and drove off at high speed into North Quesnel’s residential neighbourhood. The officer did not pursue the suspect but notified other officers in the area, according to a press release sent out at 3 p.m. today.
The same police officer located the stolen vehicle on a dead end street, but the suspect was not inside.
Officers called in a police dog from Prince George and patrolled the area.
When they arrived, the dog and its handler successfully tracked the suspect, who was hiding under a tarp inside an outbuilding less than 100 metres from the stolen vehicle.
RCMP arrested the man, who sustained minor injuries after the confrontation with the police dog.
Quesnel RCMP say the man is well known to them. He is being held for court.
The press release said RCMP are recommending several charges in relation to the incident.
