A brand-new skateboard park in Quesnel is a step closer to becoming a reality in 2018.

At their Nov. 7 meeting, City of Quesnel councillors moved to support a funding application for a skateboard park to the Northern Development Initiative Trust (NDIT) Community Halls and Recreation Facilities Program for $30,000 from the Cariboo-Chilcotin/Lillooet Regional Development Account.

Earlier, the City’s Financial Sustainability and Audit Committee recommended council give early approval to the Skateboard Park Capital project for $300,000 subject to approval of the final design work.

Funding for the project would see $30,000 coming from NDIT, $50,000 from general capital and $220,000 from the gas tax.

The City had approved $25,000 for the design of the skateboard park and the skateboard group also kicked in some money.

There will be a stakeholders meeting between 6 and 8 p.m. in Council Chambers on Nov. 16 to review three design concepts.

The goal is to build the skateboard park next year, so it is vital to set the wheels in motion as soon as possible.
