Environment Canada has released a further severe thunderstorm warning for the Quesnel area today (Aug. 1) at 3:25 p.m. This comes after a storm watch was issued earlier this morning for the Cariboo region.

“A cluster of severe thunderstorms is moving across Highway 97 between Red Rock and Dunkley,” says the news release.

The storms are travelling east at 25 km per hour.

In addition, Environment Canada says another cluster of severe thunderstorms have developed 30 km west of Quesnel. They are also moving towards the city and region at 25 km per hour.

The thunderstorms are capable of producing very strong wind gusts, up to nickel size hail and heavy rain.

The news release advises residents to take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.

Heavy downpours are likely to cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Intense lightning is likely with any thunderstorm that develops. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year.

Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce or are producing one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
