is of a Bugle manufactured
by Whaley and
Royce of Toronto.
They made musical
instruments from the
late 1800’s until 1969.
The founders, Eri
Whaley and George
Royce were born in
Stewarttown and Toronto,
respectively.
Their advertising
slogan was “Canada’s
Greatest Music
House.”
Canada’s military
procured many of
their brass instruments
from this company including
their bugles.
The Royal Canadian
Legion Br. 94 has one
in their collection.
There are no dates
or serial numbers
stamped on the instrument,
but the best information
I can find is
it’s a post WWII bugle.
Based on the cord and
colours it belonged to
a rifle regiment.
It may have belonged
to the Queen’s Own
Rifles or the Winnipeg
Rifles.
Regardless, it is
an interesting piece
and on display in the
Lounge.
Curiously, my Uncle,
Ernie McKnight of
Fort. St. John, B.C.
served in the Winnipeg
Rifles and landed
on D-Day morning,
fought through Holland
and returned
home safely.
We encourage members
of the public to
come into the Branch
and view our displays,
which are among the
best in any Legion in
B.C.
This is something in
which we take great
pride.
