Quesnel Curling Club held the Grey Cup Cashspiel last weekend (Nov. 25-26) at the curling rink, with Quesnel teams ending up in three of the four finals.

Sixteen teams vied for top spots, with four attending from out of town.

In the A event, Smithers battled Williams Lake in a tight game.

The teams were tied at three but after five, Smithers’ Ron Vanderstar made a hit and roll for two. Williams Lake’s Simone Groundwater was forced to draw for one in the seventh, but went an inch too far and Vanderstar stole one for a commanding 6-3 lead.

Vanderstar ran Groundwater out of rocks in the eighth for the win.

The B event saw two Quesnel teams fighting for the prize.

Tim Richards, Shane Yamamoto, Jerry Melnyk and Mike Fisher faced Dave Wawryk, Brent Hodgson, Jim Somerville and Jason Kozachar. It was another close game, with Wawryk making a great shot in the seventh to score two and tie the game at five.

Wawryk’s draw in the eighth was two feet too heavy and Richards, Yamamoto, Melnyk and Fisher won 6-5.

Two Quesnel teams again went head to head in the C event, with Steve Bernard’s team (including Rick Mallet, Cam Somerville and Rick Cindric) coming out flying, building an 8-0 lead after two.

Brenda Ernst and her team (including Dana Johannesen, Penni Yamamoto and Sherie Needham) came back to make it 8-4 after four, but Bernard scored three in the fifth for an 11-4 win.

And finally in the D event, Quesnel’s team of Ray Blackmore, Whitney Christie, Wade Sharp and Carol Reid played Brian Purdy’s team from Williams Lake.

Blackmore’s team built up a 6-2 lead after five, but Williams Lake came back to score five in the next two ends for a 7-6 lead after seven. Blackmore’s last rock was heavy in the extra and Purdy’s team won 8-7.
