The Quesnel and District Minor Hockey Association (QDMHA) is putting weight behind promoting girls hockey in the city.

Kristen Jensen has been appointed female coordinator, a brand-new role within the organization, to help bring more girls into the game.

Wednesday Sept. 20 was the first all-girls hockey practice at West Fraser Centre, attracting girls and young women from ages four to 17.

Chris Jensen coached the girls through some drills over the afternoon, and said they plan to split the girls into two teams (older and younger ages) to continue practising, and to eventually play other teams in the region.

All abilities were welcomed on the ice on Wednesday. Some of the older, more experienced players were paired with younger ones for some of the drills. A few of the youngest players are still learning to skate and they received plenty of support from coaches and the older players.

Kristen Jensen said she’s very excited about the upcoming season for the female players.
