The Quesnel Cariboo Observer is welcoming new staff members and saying goodbye to others this month.

Our Lifestyles editor, Annie Gallant, is retiring March 29 after almost 22 years at the Observer. Annie has been an asset to the team, with her local knowledge and dedication to the arts, and we know the community will miss her compelling stories.

“I’m still passionate about writing and I’m going to be pursuing freelance opportunities in retirement,” says Annie.

The Observer will be hosting a retirement party for Annie at the office (188 Carson Avenue) on Thursday March 29, 12-3 p.m. for anyone who would like to come down and celebrate Annie’s dedication to community reporting.

We are also saying a fond farewell to Autumn MacDonald, our editor of almost 10 years, and Ken Alexander, who has been our temporary editor since last fall.

Melanie Law has moved into the editor’s seat, after joining the team as a reporter last summer. Melanie grew up in Quesnel but left after high school to pursue studies and, later, a career in publishing in Vancouver, London, UK, and Montreal. Melanie returned to Quesnel last spring with her young family.

“I’m excited to take on the responsibilities of editor, and look forward to bringing local stories to our readers in print and online,” she says.

Ronan O’Doherty is joining the editorial team at the end of the month, arriving in time for Annie’s retirement party. Ronan graduated from Humber College with a Bachelor of Journalism and is driving across the country from Toronto to take up a reporter role.

The Observer will be filling its third editorial role soon, and will provide an update when possible. Ken will continue to contribute stories in the meantime, along with other freelance staff.

Quesnel Cariboo Observer publisher Tracey Roberts says: “We’re excited about all the changes taking place in our office.

“We’re sad to see Annie go and wish her all the best in her retirement. We hope to see plenty of community members come out on March 29 to give her a great send off.

“Our new editor is excited to start fresh with two new reporters, and is doing well in the role so far.”

The Observer’s advertising, production and circulation staff (Karen Powell, Lorrie Milsom and Leeanne McLennan) continue to excel in their roles.
