Barkerville is getting ready for its annual Olde-Fashioned Christmas event for Dec. 14 and Dec. 15.
The historic park will be filled with cheer as visitors will be able to hunt for gifts for the holidays and enjoy seasonal treats.
"We're excited to bring back Olde-Fashioned Christmas," said Carrie Chard, Barkerville's general manager in a news release. "This event returned last year and has been a favourite among our guests. After the challenges posed by the Antler Creek Wildfire this summer, we were uncertain whether we could host it again this year, but thanks to a generous donation from Osisko Mining Development, the event will be bright and lively."
Barkerville's staple locations will be open and people will be able to do some of their holiday shopping at McPherson's Jewellers, Mason & Daly and C. Strouss. There will be carolling along Main Street and people can enjoy baked goods from the Goldfield Bakery or a bowl of chili at the House Hotel Saloon.
There will be live events throughout the site, horse-drawn sleigh rides and even photos taken with Father Christmas.
A $12 daily admission will be charged for adults at the gate and online with a $10 rate for seniors. Children and youth will be admitted for free with a non-perishable donation to the Wells Food Hamper.
“Admissions are very important to our special events and summer programs,” said Chard. “Maintenance and care for Barkerville’s structures and artifacts are funded by the provincial government, but in order to provide quality programming and other services such as public venues and washrooms, the Barkerville Heritage Trust relies on admissions at the gate, as well as grant opportunities, sponsorships and donations.”
People who plan to enjoy the weekend of cheer at the historic site should dress warmly and be prepared for changing weather and snowy roads along Barkerville Highway.
