The Barlow Creek 4-H Club got an early start to Earth Day.
Nine members wore yellow safety vests and gloves to pick garbage from the North Star Road Interchange late Thursday, April 21.
Leader Stacey Pfannmueller said the optional initiative used to be part of the program they once did every year.
“This is our first year we’re just trying to restart that,” she said.
“So every year, we’re going to pick a project, and this year we decided to pick up the garbage in the intersection just to give something back to the community.”
Several parents also joined the members who filled black garbage bags with roadside waste, including food wrappers, coffee cups, cardboard and more.

A large plastic lid from a tote was even picked up.
“From the kids, it’s positive,” Pfannmueller said. “They want to be here, and we’re just getting together and doing something as a club.”
President Kadin Thomson was pleased to be hanging out with his friends while bringing benefits to the environment.
Thomson has been with the Barlow Creek 4-H Club for four years and is currently working on a steer and swine project.
“I think it’s good for the community,” he said of their litter pick. “Hopefully, it brings some people to come to watch the show and sale.”
Pfannmueller noted the community has been supportive of the club by buying raffle tickets and donating bottles to their bottle drives.
This year’s Quesnel and District 4-H Show and Sale is set for August 3-7 inside Alex Fraser Park.
