It’s once again time for students to begin applying for bursaries, scholarships and awards to help them further their post-secondary schooling.

The BC Hydro Power Pioneers are encouraging all 2018 graduates to apply for their $500 Community Service Award issued to one deserving student in the Quesnel School District catchment area.

For the past 12 years, a high school student in Quesnel has been awarded this honour but in order to keep this award in town, Power Pioneer Roger North says they must receive at least three applications in the current year. Currently there are 20 awards handed out across the province each year.

The deadline for applications is March 31 and as the package must be mailed, the postmark must be on or before that date.

The Power Pioneer Community Service Award recognizes youth who have excelled in community service, North says.

“We are looking for students who have made outstanding contributions in their community for a considerable amount of time, or who have initiated, organized or contributed significantly to a one-time project.”

According to BC Hydro, priority will be given to students who volunteer in their communities by participating in or organizing programs and initiatives that focus on one of the following areas:

• the smart use of energy — show how you have creatively educated, inspired and developed new ideas around energy and energy efficiency;

• the promotion of safety – at the top of BC Hydro’s list, of course, is electrical safety; however, it can also focus on water safety and emergency preparedness and again be creative as there are many forms safety factors in projects.

Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of British Columbia; graduating from high school in June 2018; and planning to attend an accredited Canadian university, college or technical school in the areas of science, technology, engineering, math or the trades for fall 2018.

In addition to completing the application form, at the bottom of the form, a 500 word essay of voluntary contributions you have made to your community, which could include thoughts on energy saving; reference letters from the community organizations you have worked with, and a reference letter from a teacher, counsellor or principal at your school; confirmation of a passing grade; proof of age and citizenship or status; and finally proof of post-secondary institution application.

Application forms are available at the Cariboo Observer, Correlieu Secondary School counselling office or by calling Roger North at 250-992-7389.
