The Friends of the Quesnel Library are hosting a presentation about birding in Costa Rica on Thursday, Nov. 1.

Jerry McFetridge, a retiree, will give the presentation, which he says will also cover the politics, environment, geography and other wildlife in the country.

McFetridge was in Costa Rica last November, where he and his wife spent three weeks exploring the country. A highlight of his trip was exploring the Corcovado National Park, which is located in the Osa Peninsula — one of the most biologically diverse regions in the world.

The park is home to jaguars, pumas, monkeys and more. And Costa Rica itself has twice as many bird species as Canada and the US combined.

McFetridge says beyond the biodiversity of the region, the country is also interesting for its politics, history and its protection of the natural environment.

Costa Rica has pledged to become carbon neutral by 2021, and got rid of its army 70 years ago. McFetridge says he also plans to discuss the size and population of the country in comparison to that of B.C.

McFetridge and his wife have travelled frequently since they entered retirement; they have also visited the Galapagos in Ecuador, and spent some time exploring the mountains in the interior of Mexico.

His presentation will take place on Thursday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. in the Quesnel Library meeting room.
