It was a celebratory afternoon at Bouchie Lake Elementary as students gathered to duct tape their principal and one of their teachers to a wall after raising more than $1,110 for the Terry Fox Foundation.
Resource teachers Keri Whitehead and Emily McCart told students excitedly gathered in the gymnasium on Friday, Oct. 14. they would be dyeing their hair blue, green and magenta for students reaching their $600 goal.
In addition, Don Schneider and principal Corry Climenhage would be duct taped to the wall in front of students who captured their fundraising goals of $700 and $800.
“We raised $1,117,” Whitehead exclaimed, drawing applause and cheers from students. “We did the math, and that’s about $80 for every student in the school, so congratulations and thank you so much.”
In 2021, Whitehead dyed her hair for students following their annual Terry Fox Run. She received a resounding yes from students when she asked them if she should dye her hair the same colour again as McCart’s but brighter and bolder this year.
McCart was anticipating showing off her new hair colour on Monday, Oct. 17, while Whitehead said she was awaiting the next available appointment with a hairdresser.
Schneider and Climenhage stood on a bench with their backs against the wall while students grabbed pieces of duct tape to stick on them.
The many duct tape pieces were not enough to leave Schneider hanging on the wall after White and McCart removed the bench from under their feet.
“I want to say it feels like a million bucks, but it feels like $1,117,” Schneider said, receiving laughs.
Climenhage told students it felt surprisingly well being stuck to a wall, and while she could hang there for a few more minutes, she was a bit concerned about her neck level.
“I think we learned some valuable lessons on physics as Ms. Whitehead said — Mr. Schneider needed some longer pieces at the top to hold him up,” Climenhage said, adding she would be up to being duct taped again.
“There’s always some fun way to celebrate our achievements, and these kinds of activities provide kids with lasting lifetime memories that they’ll never forget, so it’s important to do the simple and special things in school.”
Students completed their outdoor Terry Fox Run with Schneider dressing up as a Schneider hotdog on Thursday, Oct. 13.
