There were many ‘sweet’ surprises in an online dessert auction that raised more than $6,800 for the Quesnel and District Hospice Palliative Care Association (QDHPCA).

The Twelve Days of Desserts opened on Facebook Tuesday, Feb. 1, and featured a daily dessert from local bakers, including scrumptious cakes, trifles and more to bid on until Saturday, Feb. 12.

Another cake donation by Mike Ernst in memory of his grandmother Jean Muir, pushed the fundraiser to an additional day.

The made-to-order cake sold for $1,000 on Sunday, but that was not the highest bid placed throughout the auction.

A few days earlier, a cake also donated by Ernst went for $1,500.

“For everyone that is shocked by my bid, I did it not only to support a great organization but because this cake was in honour of a very special lady that gave back her whole life to so many causes and organizations,” Alanna Crocker Givens wrote on the Twelve Days of Desserts Facebook page.

“This cake has a very special meaning to not only me but a great number of people.”

QDHPCA executive director Suzannah Meir was shocked by some of the bids and described the fundraiser as a really fun event that went well.

A cash donation by Clayton’s Funeral Directors topped up funds raised for the QDHPCA to just over $6,800.

This had marked the first online dessert auction fundraiser in which desserts would typically have been auctioned at the QDHPCA’s annual gala last held in February 2020 before the novel coronavirus was declared a pandemic.

Meir thanked all the bakers that donated ‘amazing’ and ‘eye appealing’ desserts.

“And to all the people who bid, thank you so much and we really hope that you enjoyed your dessert,” she added.

“I hope we do this again in the near future, and we will be racking our brain to figure out what other fun fundraiser we can put on for sure.”

Funds from the Twelve Days of Desserts will support the potential purchase of several new reclining chairs in the hospice unit.
