Have you ever thought about showcasing your art in a gallery? Now’s the time!

The Quesnel Art Gallery is looking for proposals for the 2019 exhibition year.

Joan Ramsey Harker, a volunteer director with the gallery, says that anyone interested in putting on a show but doesn’t have anything complete or ready-to-go yet can still apply, as they’ll have plenty of time to finish their project.

The main parameter is that the exhibition focus on a specific theme. Past show themes have included interpretations (where three different artists presented their interpretations of specific words and ideas), the night sky, a canoe trip around Bowron Lake, summertime, and even one titled My Garden is Smiling (which, Harker says, was mostly about trees).

“We have so many talented artists in Quesnel. Surely some of them have a new idea for a show,” says Harker. She adds that committing to a show “is very inspiring.”

It can take approximately 20 to 30 pieces, depending on their size, to fill the gallery.

Harker says that artists often sell pieces throughout the duration of their show as well. And it’s the commission from those pieces that keeps the gallery running. “We’re supporting artists,” says Harker, “but they’re supporting us too, by giving us a show.”

Harker, a volunteer with the gallery and an artist herself, is the one who reviews the applications and selects who will host an exhibition and when it will take place. She also works with the artists to get their show up and running, and even directs them to the media before the start of their show to help them get the word out.

She says getting to meet and work with other artists and volunteers is the best part of the job.

Something else the gallery is always looking for is sponsors. Every show needs a sponsor, and despite several loyal business sponsors, Harker says they’re in need of private sponsors as well.

Submissions are due on Sunday, Sept. 30, 2018. You can access the submission forms and guidelines at http://www.quesnelartgallery.com.
