Carlos Kelly of Carlos Place Fish and Chips has started a new fundraiser for the local Special Olympics.

Along with a new jukebox, customers will find a donation box for the Quesnel Special Olympics. Before playing a tune, they’re asked to drop a donation in the box. The coin slot on the jukebox is broken, which is why the box was brought out.

Kelly says it’s been a huge hit so far, particularly with his senior customers. “As soon as they see it, you can see their eyes just sparkle.”

Some couples even get up and dance, he adds.

Kelly got the idea to host a long-term fundraiser for the Special Olympics after holding a raffle for them last year. “I wanted to help support the town and I had it in mind that they needed some help.”

While many enjoy the songs on the jukebox, others see what it’s for and simply donate. Kelly thinks it’s one of the only (if not the only) functioning jukeboxes in town.

In the first month of the fundraiser, the jukebox raised $190.85 for Special Olympics. The fundraiser remains ongoing, indefinitely.
