École Red Bluff Lhtako Elementary students publish anthology of writing

Students got to take their copies home last week

École Red Bluff Lhtako Elementary students are official authors and have a book to prove it.

Friday, June 17, was the first day the young writers got to see the finished copies Of Sand and Sea, chockful of stories written and illustrated by them.

“I’m happy. I like books like this,” said Grade 7 student and author Addison Closs. “I’m going to put it on my shelf and then read it a few times.”

It was at the beginning of the school year when the Grades 5, 6 and 7 library classes began writing poetry, short stories and even non-fiction with teacher librarian Teresa Mccart.

“We’ve been working all year on writing and have compiled this anthology as a way to validate the amazing writing that kids have done,” Mccart said.

The title takes from the Métis dot art of Grade 6 student Kolton Erdman whose art graces the book’s front cover.

The book is the second written and illustrated by École Red Bluff Lhtako students.

Mccart said one was completed last year.

“This is what makes it worthwhile,” Mccart added Friday afternoon in the library, where students were able to pick up their pre-purchased copy.

“It’s a lot of work but seeing it like this, I think it makes the kids proud; it makes me super proud.”

Additional copies will be available for students to borrow and read from the school’s library.
