Fiddlers had toes tapping with classic ditties at the Quesnel Royal Canadian Legion on Saturday, Oct. 1.
The Quesnel Branch of the B.C. Old Time Fiddlers’ Association held its 50th annual contest, followed by a potluck dinner and family dance.
Contestants from across the province participated in the late morning contest that carried into the afternoon, aiming to impress three judges.
Doreen Rail placed first in the senior class category, with Dilip Mistry receiving second place and Edna Lansdowne awarded third place.
Theda Lakey, 9, had a grin on her face as she accepted first place in the little britches (little junior) category.
Open class was awarded to Janice Meyer.
Alex Randall of Surrey and Andrew Goulet of Prince Rupert each received a pen for traveling the farthest to participate.
Goulet, who grew up in Quesnel, took home top prize in the championship class category, with second place going to Randall and third place to Anita Mamela.
“I’m excited because I played my first contest when I was seven years old here, and they had it at St. Ann’s Hall,” Goulet said. “I love the environment, the people, and the music when we play for events.”
Playing backup was Jean Gelinas, a longtime member.
“It was great,” Gelinas said of the contest, noting there was lots of people, lots of fun and lots of good music.
