The Quesnel Film Club is proud to kick off their fall program with Beginners, Sept. 8 at 6:30 p.m. at the Carib Theatre.

Beginners, a movie directed and written by Mike Mills, offers a look inside a family exploring love, loss and self-discovery.

In the centre is Oliver, played by Ewan McGregor, a 38 year old graphic designer (loosely based on Mills himself) who is coping with two bombs dropped on him by his father, portrayed by Christopher Plummer.

After 44 years of marriage, Oliver’s father comes out of the closet, and informs Oliver that he has terminal cancer.

Oliver finds himself learning to cope with the loss of his father and trying to maintain a relationship with a French actress, Mélanie Laurent of Inglorious Basterds.

The dramatic comedy, set in three different timelines shows Oliver taking care of his late father’s Jack Russell terrier Arthur, oftentimes engaging in conversations with the dog aided by subtitles.

This character study is about people discovering themselves despite age, preconception and illness.

Other movies on the Quesnel Film Club’s agenda are Submarine, a movie based on the book of the same name and Senna, a documentary about Brazilian Formula One legend, Ayrton Senna.

Tickets for the shows are $9 for regular admission, $7 for seniors.
