Fire House visits local Quesnel schools

Elementary students learn fire safety from fire fighters and the Quesnel Fire House

Elementary students at all Quesnel schools learn about fire safety through the fire house and fire fighters.

Fire House was started in 1991 and each year Quesnel Volunteer Fire Department members demonstrate fire safety to all schools in School District 28. Studies have shown that Grade 3 is the best age group to show the house.

Businesses have shown support by donating products to the house and by donating $4 to help purchase each of the Fire Safety book and video, which is distributed to the students. If anyone would like to donate to this, contact the QVFD. The QVFD took Fire House to Riverview elementary school where 22, Grade 3 students were first shown video on fire safety in the home, then a smoke simulation was engaged where the students needed to escape from the fire and they were also shown how to crawl on the floor as opposed to walking to exits. Other areas included feeling doors for heat, escaping through windows and meeting at a pre-planned location. The importance of fire alarms and keeping bedroom doors closed while sleeping was discussed.
