The Friends of Bouchie-Milburn Society has partnered with Pause to Feather Creations and the Bouchie Lake Country Store for Project Bouchie Bluebird.

It is a simple and easy way to help out wild birds by providing them with nesting habitat. Not only will the wild birds benefit, but so will Baker Creek Enhancement Society. It is a win-win for everyone involved.

Through Project Bouchie Bluebird, nest boxes (commonly known as bluebird boxes) will be made available for placement anywhere in the Bouchie-Milburn area. There are four ways to support the program.

1. For every $10 received, our community will receive a bluebird box constructed by Pause to Feather Creations. The minimum number of boxes we have to order at once is 10. What is fantastic about the cash donation is that Pause to Feather Creations will donate 50 per cent of all funds received to Baker Creek Enhancement Society to support its environmental initiatives.

2. The boxes are handcrafted from scrap wood. We are accepting donations of scrap wood to pass on to Pause to Feather Creations. Wood scraps must be at least 16 inches long, six inches wide and half-inch or greater. Plywood or one-inch by six-inch rough cut or lumber are both ideal.

3. Once we have the bluebird boxes, a crew of volunteers will be needed to install them. They can be installed on fence posts, close to wetlands, or among trees and shrubs. Each habitat will attract different species of birds to the nesting boxes. It is ideal if the boxes are numbered and their locations mapped so they can be routinely checked.

4. You can also build your own nest boxes and either donate them to the project or install them on your property.

To support the program, a 1.5 hour seminar with Grant Hill of Pause to Feather Creations will be held at the Bouchie Lake Country Store on April 10 at 7 p.m., titled “It’s all about the Birds – An Informal Evening Seminar”.

Grant specializes and focuses on bird and wildlife awareness and conservation, through farmers’ markets, conservation groups, and speaking events. Entrance to the seminar is by donation to Project Bouchie Bluebird. Please bring a lawnchair.
