Hunters not happy with Harper government

Basic RGB
Heather Peters and Bruce Self disagree with Harper government policies.

Heather Peters and Bruce Self are fed up with  Stephen Harper and his Conservative Party.

“Do they think making a fuss about the long gun registry is going to make us forget about their corporate tax cuts?” Self asked, who lives outside of Quesnel in B.C.’s North Cariboo.

“Hasn’t stopped us from going out in the bush to hunt.”

“The Conservatives keep posing as friends of rural Canadians,” Peters said.

“But their track record proves they’re not friends of ours. Why would anyone fall for this nonsense?

“Harper’s government was found in contempt of Parliament – the first time this has happened in Canadian history.

“That’s contempt for the people of Canada – all of us. It’s a disgrace.”

The minority government’s cuts to  funding for the Canadian Foundation for Climate and Atmospheric Sciences also riles the couple, who live in the centre of the mountain pine beetle epidemic.

“The bugs have killed 16.3 million hectares of forest and are still spreading. Everyone in our region knows that warmer winters are one of the main factors in the skyrocketing beetle population. We need more climate research, not less,” Self said.

The couple say they haven’t forgotten the Harper government’s role in foisting the HST on B.C.

“The Conservative motto “Here for Canada” should really say “Here for big business,” Peters said. “Whatever happened to the party of Diefenbaker?”

The two will be voting for the person they feel has the best chance of defeating the Conservative candidate in their riding. Both have been hunting moose and deer for many years in the Cariboo-Chilcotin. Heather shoots a Remington 30-06; Bruce shoots a Husqvarna 30-06 with a custom stock. Mort, their dog, is a Chesapeake and likes to hunt grouse mano a mano.

Bill Horne is an artist living in Wells.
