Hayden Hill, a 10-year-old Barlow Creek student, won a gold medal for his efforts at the Central Interior Science Exhibition, March 10. Hill was the only participant from School District 28. Hill’s project Where there’s a charge, there’s a spark involved generating static electricity using a wool sock and a piece of acrylic. Hill used a metal pie plate with a styrofoam cup attached to the centre of it and used a modified film container for the Leyden jar. The device measured the spark created from the static in the jar. The spark determines the amount of voltage the Leyden jar can store. Hill received the gold medal in the engineering category.
