Kudos to Honey on a job well done

I am going to start off this week’s column with huge kudos to Honey Affleck, who was largely responsible for the Trade’s Fair/Showoff this past weekend.

She had a committee of people who helped, but the lion’s share of this project fell squarely on her petite shoulders.

Job well done Honey, you are an inspiration to what can be done with determination and dedication. I salute you.

For those of you who attended this event I am sure you will agree it was well worth making the effort to get down to the arena.

There may not have been overcrowding of booths, but those there were well manned and their set up was brilliant.

We are expecting this event to grow each year and that will be a good thing. It will bring in much needed funding for the Legion.

Thank you to all the volunteers who helped with set up and take down especially the Air Cadets who did an incredible job.

We also were unable to go ahead with the Friday night Jam to coincide with the Showoff as there were no jammers who were able to provide entertainment for  this event. Maybe next time.

We are hoping to re-start the Friday night jams and are working on getting together with all those interested to see what will work for everyone. Any suggestions are welcome.

The Sunday evening jams are still going well and thanks to Neil and Hans who are usually manning the door and sound system.

This week we had the Rotary luncheon in the hall. The event was served a fabulous lunch made by none other than those incredible LA cooks.

We certainly are lucky to have such skilled workers in the kitchen.  I think this week’s wonder cook was Fran. You know Fran – the lady with the huge smile, which is only second to the huge hugs she likes to give out.

Speaking of LA ladies, I have a secret to share with all of you who like to frequent the flea market.

Never, ever bring your purchases to the table and then ask “how much?”

I made this mistake on Saturday and I was at their mercy.

Now those sweet-looking white-haired ladies might look like they can be an easy pushover. Not so.

I think the secret is to take each item individually and before approaching the dear ladies taking the cash, you ask, very nonchalant like for the price on the item.

This way you are in a much stronger dickering position, because they are not certain you are going to buy. But if you foolishly bring it right to them – they got ya.

I really need to brush up on my flea market dickering skills. Oh and the flea market is back to summer hours which is on both Fridays and Saturdays. Good luck with those ladies.

This coming weekend is the Leadership and Business Development seminar in Williams Lake.

Your Legion manager, Wanda, president Neil, past president Lil, vice president Sharon and secretary Honey are attending the meeting.

Now you might think “wow an expense paid weekend in the Stampede Town” – no.

All of these members will be responsible for their own transportation, lodging and meals – nothing is paid for out of Legion funds.

Just wanted to make sure  there is no misunderstanding. For one, the Legion could not afford to send paid representatives and for another thing, your representatives do this on their own dime because they choose to do so. It is after all, voluntary to attend.

OK , in case you have not heard we had an extra Roll Call at the general meeting and it still was not won.

We will do this at every general meeting so even if you cannot make it down to the Legion weekdays at 12:30 p.m. or Saturday at 3 p.m. you still can get in on the fun. The pot is more than $120 and who cannot use that kind of pocket change.

Also at the general meeting we had the honour of a visit from Vivian McNeil, our zone commander who performed the installation of the new executive officers. Thank you Vivian for making this visit.

Also discussed at the general meeting was setting up a phoning committee headed by Rudy. You may be getting a phone call sometime soon.

We are trying to make up lists of where the membership interests lie and hopefully get a list of volunteers who can work in their area of expertise.

We are also looking to get some input into how to keep all our members happy with how things are going in this, their ‘private club’.

We also held the draw for two tickets to the Two Rivers Boxing match, as well as the draw for new members. So that makes three draws in all and I did not win a thing.

So many reasons to keep up-to-date

on what is happening at your local Legion.

Sharon MacDonald is a Legion member.
