Jersey Leeson and Paige Grant hope to spark reading amongst students at Lakeview Elementary School.
The Grade 7 students built a mini wooden library that was recently installed near the school’s main entrance on Beryl Road.
Tucked inside the blue painted structure with two green shelves were over a dozen books Wednesday, April 6, among a yellow note “take a book, leave a book.”
It had taken a little while for the girls to build the mini-library as they met only once a week during what is called “Genius Hour.”
B.C.’s curriculum describes “Genius Hour” as a time when students can pursue their own interests by working an hour each week on projects of their choosing.

“We thought it would be cool to build something, and then we came across an idea of that,” Leeson said.
Leeson and Grant have a love for reading themselves.
Leeson likes delving into fantasy books while Grant said her favorite book is “To Kill a Mockingbird.”
Both hope their mini library will inspire other students to take up reading, and now that the weather is warming up to possibly enjoy a book outside.
