Organizers of the Little Hiking Festival in Wells, B.C., said the idea for a hiking festival was something Meghan Keir had been thinking about for some time.
There are a lot of different festivals, but no hiking festival in the area, said the guide and one of the owners of Guided By Adventure professional guiding company, based in Prince George, B.C.
So the Little Hiking Festival was born, and is a collaboration between Guided by Adventure and White Gold Adventures, two adventure tourism operators in the region. In the information for the festival on their website it said they chose Wells because “staying anywhere in Wells is like basecamping at a backcountry hut in the mountains.”
From June 21 to 23, participants will come to Wells, B.C. to take part in the celebration of “doing hard things with good people.”
“We’re just super excited to have this community of hikers come together,” said Kate Pike, also with Guided by Adventure.
The opening on the Friday will get things rolling with a nod to the solstice and entertainment, followed by three hikes of varying levels on Saturday to choose from.
Then Saturday night will be a range of live entertainment, from live music by the Interstellar Jays, to a comedian and karaoke.
A buffet dinner will feed the hungry hikers.
Sunday will be workshops on photography, yoga and mushroom foraging as well as a gentle wander around Wells.
With about 65 people already registered for the weekend’s events, the organizers said they hope to end up with about 70 to 75 hikers ready to take to the mountains surrounding Wells with them.
The weekend will also include a few opportunities to raise funds for the Wells and Area Trail Society which maintains their local trails.
