More than 30 people attended a luncheon at CNC/UNBC in honour of Social Work Week.

Social workers from Amata House, Women’s Resource Centre, Ministry of Children and Family Development, Quesnel and District Hospice Palliative Care Association, G.R. Baker Hospital, SD28 and 13 bachelor of social work students joined thousands of their counterparts across North American in celebrating Social Work Week. Having a designated week allows the promotion of the profession, strengthens individual practices and highlights issues that directly affect the people they serve.

As a result of the accelerated changes to social programs that Canada is experiencing, the Canadian Association of Social Workers and the Canadian Association of Social Work Education along with the B.C. Association of Social Workers jointly proclaimed Social Workers Defending Social Programs for a Stronger Canada the theme for 2013.

Locally, the School of Social Work at the University of Northern British Columbia in Quesnel hosted a lunch March 5 to show support of the social programs, the social work students and to recognize the hard work of social workers in the community.

There are currently 15 students in the BSW degree program which can be completed all at the UNBC South Central campus. The lunch offered an opportunity for students to meet practicing professional social workers and to hear more about the important work they do. In total, 32 attended the lunch.
