The Recycling Council of British Columbia (RCBC) is calling B.C. residents to celebrate our provincial day in a more sustainable way.
“What better way is there to honour our beautiful province than to ensure we leave it in good shape for future generations?” asks RCBC CEO Brock Macdonald.
Here are some tips on how you can go green this long weekend, and throughout the rest of summer:
Rethink, Reduce, Enjoy: It’s easier than ever to go #zerowaste when planning events and festivities. Move away from using single-use utensils and plates for picnics and parties. Decorate with live plants and flowers instead of disposable ribbons and balloons. Choose local foods with minimal packaging and drinks in refillable containers. Compost your leftovers to ensure nothing is sent to the landfill. Go straw-free with your cold drinks whenever possible.
Do One Thing: There are so many ways to make a difference. Join Ocean Wise’s #PlasticWise campaign to get tips and challenges on reducing unnecessary waste. Sign up for a #GreatShorelineCleanup to keep your local beaches clean and pristine. Volunteer with #GreenTeamsofCanada to do hands-on habitat restoration work at a nearby park while spending time outside. Or consider pledging your support as an individual or a business to #NationalWasteReductionWeek this October.
The RCBC was founded in 1974 and is Canada’s longest-serving recycling council. RCBC educates in preventing and reducing the use of precious resources before they ever need to be recycled.
They also provide information about the options available in their communities through a province-wide recycling hotline, the Recyclepedia search engine, and a downloadable smartphone app.
