Meals on Wheels is a valuable service for many seniors in our community who are finding it difficult to cook hot and nutritious meals for themselves.

Maeford Place Assisted Living Residence prepares the meals on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and the meals are ready for pick up and delivery at 2 p.m.

“We rely heavily on the kindness and caring of volunteers to deliver the meals for us and can’t thank them enough,” Maeford manager Joanne Phillips says.

“All of the meals are prepared fresh in our kitchen at Maeford Place.”

The homemade meals consist of a protein or meat, such as a chicken breast, fish and beef, along with baked, mashed, or roasted potatoes (or rice), a hot vegetable, a salad (green salad with dressing on the side, or homemade coleslaw, or Waldorf salad), a whole wheat bun from the bakery with a pad of butter, a dessert of some kind, and a separate container of home made soup.

All this is available for $6 per meal. Most seniors find it to be enough food for two meals.

The idea behind the Meals on Wheels program is not to make a profit but to help the seniors of the community maintain a healthy diet that meets the dietary needs of that age group.

The meals are also prepared with as little salt as possible and are low in spices.

“As mentioned, however, we rely heavily on volunteers to pick up and deliver the meals three times a week and are in desperate need of more volunteers right now.

”If you, or anyone you know, can spare about an hour of your time once a week on a regular or casual basis, please call Meals on Wheels at 250-992-8342 to arrange a ride along with one of our wonderful volunteers to see what the program is all about.

“You may also call the number above if you want more information or have any questions at all. Let’s keep this program running and available to the community as many people depend on it.

“We are also looking for volunteers here at Maeford Place for different activities and events, and welcome your phone calls to inquire about this as well.”
