The Quesnel Art Gallery is working to beautify spaces outside of their indoor space.
The gallery has launched mini-displays called Free Little Galleries. One is inside Spirit Square in downtown Quesnel, the other is outside the Quesnel Arts and Recreation Centre.
Gallery director Marguerite Hall said inspiration came from previous projects which reached out to the community.
“Last year we did the mural, where you could take home the pieces and work on it socially distanced,” she said, referring to the community mural put up last fall. “Somebody seen a post on Instagram about Free Little Art Galleries put up in Seattle and Toronto, and so we thought ‘lets do that.’”

Hall explained the rules of the gallery, designed to make more people embrace creating things.
“If they take something out, they have to put something in,” she said. “Make sure it is named, and make sure there’s nothing hateful or discriminatory, and that’s it.”
Those who submit to the gallery are also asked to take a photo and tag #qagfreelittlegallery.
The Quesnel Art Gallery’s summer student will be monitoring the site to keep things fresh.
“I just love ‘em, they’re just so cool,” Hall said.
A Summer Garden Community Art Show is on display inside the main gallery until July 29.
