Mothers support group for all ages

Amata Transition House staffers offering a support group for parents and caregivers

Sometimes you just want to talk with people who understand what you’re experiencing.

Trained facilitators at Amata Transition House, Michelle and Gillian, are launching a free, eight-week pilot project, Mothers’ Support Group, beginning Feb. 8 and invite mothers and caregivers of all ages to share in the discussions.

It was during a training session in Vancouver, where the two learned about mothers’ support groups which were being very well received and were helpful to those who participated.

Unique to Quesnel, Mothers Support Group is a two-hour session, 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. every Wednesday morning, with the first hour a discussion on areas of concern identified by the facilitators but with full participation from the group.

The second hour will be an open discussion of any subject that interests the participants as well as lots of time for questions.

“We expect to explore issues such as the  role of technology in relations, how relationships change with families and many other issues that challenge families from cradle to grave,” Michelle said.

“Grief and loss, from family members to pets, affect families at some point and that subject often surfaces when participants are comfortable enough to raise the issue and share.”

Gillian emphasized the group is a support group, not a lecture series.

“The group will be driven by the commonality of problems that seem to arise with children in all stages of life and every ethnic background,” she said.

“We’re hoping that women from diverse backgrounds will choose to attend, providing a wide range of perspectives which add immeasurably to the discussion.”

Michelle said the goal of the pilot program was to create an atmosphere where women feel comfortable in sharing as well as gain insight into parenting.

“We see this as a safe place for women to share success and challenges in all aspects of their life,” she said.

“While we hope it is educational, we also want the group to be a fun experience,” Gillian added.

To register for the Mothers’ Support Group phone Michelle or Gillian at 250-992-7321.

The group runs from Feb. 8 – March 28 in the group room at Amata Transition House.

There will be snacks and a weekly door prize.
