Students at the North Cariboo Christian School in Quesnel are putting the call out to local non-profits after recently making soup for the Salvation Army.

The Grade 8-9 students are eager to continue lending a helping hand.

“We were trying to look online for some of the areas of need in Quesnel, and they had a hard time other than the Salvation Army and the North Cariboo Seniors’ Council, which I’m connected with,” said applied skills program teacher Julie Giesbrecht.

“They’re looking for opportunities if there are outreach programs that want help that could contact me and then they could help.”

The students made 100 servings of potato bacon soup on Monday, Nov. 7, through concession sales held Mondays by the ninth graders.

The flavour was determined by a class vote with the participation of staff after the young learners practiced their cooking skills by making a small number of different types of soups.

It was delivered to the Salvation Army by a parent volunteer.

”Because this is a new program for us I had asked the kids about areas they wanted to improve in our school, and the majority of them said they wanted more outreach opportunities,” Giesbrecht said, noting she was approached last year to teach the applied skills program on Mondays.

“So this was kid directed; this was not me saying we need to do this. This is the heart of the children in those grades, and it’s wonderful what’s happening here.”

Before the end of this month, the Grade 8-9 students will be helping Seasons House with a winter clothing drive at various churches where donation boxes will be available.

On Monday, Nov. 14, the ninth graders are anticipated to volunteer with the North Cariboo Seniors’ Council making dozens of homemade healthy meals for seniors.

In December, the North Cariboo Christian School will hold its annual food drive supporting the Salvation Army.
