They smiled, they sat, wagged their tails, accepted treats, took a walk and along the way raised just under $2,000.

Pooches, along with their owners, took to West Fraser Timber Park Sunday afternoon for the SPCA’s annual Paws for a Cause.

Bulldogs, wiener dogs and Labrador, all kinds of dogs and owners took part in what local SPCA branch manager, Shawna Spencer, described as an important fundraiser for the organization.

Among the participants was Brandy, a golden retriever, who had an inauspicious debut at the SPCA.

“She was in horrible shape and badly starved,” owner Patricia Williamson said of Brandy’s condition when she was dropped off at the SPCA.

Brandy was in such rough shape, Williamson explained, that she couldn’t walk when she arrived at the SPCA and remained there for two weeks before she could be fostered.

The Williamson family took Brandy in and after two months of nursing and nurturing Brandy recovered.

“Today she is healthy and full of energy,” Williamson said as Brandy fooled around with the kids.

“She loves being with the kids.”

Also on hand was Rudy, a two-year old American bulldog cross with a face that only a mother could love.

But, Sarah Steeves, who works at the SPCA, fell in love with Rudy the moment he walked into the SPCA shelter.

“I knew I had to take him home with me,” she said with a big smile as she gave Rudy a belly rub.
