The Quesnel ambassador leadership program candidates for 2022 were welcomed by city council during their Tuesday, March 15 meeting, with the hope they will get more opportunities than previous years.

The ambassador leadership program is meant to build leadership and public speaking skills in young community members. The program has five candidates in 2022.

“In particular, the last couple of years have been a real struggle for all of us,” Quesnel mayor Bob Simpson said.

“We haven’t had the luxury over the past couple of years of getting to know the ambassadors the way we normally do… I know you’ve been involved in the community in many creative ways, and we do appreciate that.”

Candidates for 2022 include Navaeh Kueber, sponsored by Rocky Peak Outfitters Inc., Jada Crossman sponsored by Wizards Garage, Marley Conlin sponsored by West Central Pipe, Oliva Trimble sponsored by M. Daniels Consulting and Daria Brownmiller, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Quesnel.

“We look forward to whoever ends up wearing the ambassador banner in the coming years, to get back to a more normal event,” Simpson said.

Last year’s ambassadors, Jaeana Dumais, Jessie Johal and Nylene Runge were on hand to welcome the candidates, give them their sash and a rose.

“I’m so proud of each of you for joining this program,” Runge said, while addressing the candidates.

“You are going to make great friends and great memories. You’re going to learn so many amazing skills you’re going to use the rest of your lives.”

Each candidate also spoke about why they joined the program during the meeting, before heading outside for photos.

Simpson added his thanks to the volunteers and sponsors of the potential ambassadors.

“This is a very important program to our community,” Simpson said, adding city council supports the program with funding.

“The program couldn’t run without the work of the volunteers.”

The Quesnel Ambassador Program runs for six months before the ambassadors are selected.
