Quesnel businesses give school district a breakfast boost

Some businesses gave the money they usually spend on Halloween candy to SD28’s breakfast program

With COVID-19 putting a damper on the usual Halloween celebrations downtown, some Quesnel businesses found a different way to support youth.

At least a dozen businesses donated to the Quesnel School District’s breakfast program after this year’s downtown Halloween Treat Trail was cancelled.

The district received more than $2,000 in funding for its program.

Some businesses decided to double up, not only handing out candy, but also donating to the breakfast program.

There are eight schools in the district with full breakfast programs, which give free breakfasts to any students who need them.

“We regret we won’t be able to see all the great, adorable and inventive costumes today downtown,” reads a Facebook post from the Quesnel Downtown Association, alongside a list of businesses who donated. “Thank you to everyone for their continued support of our downtown.”

Despite the pandemic, a few locations on Reid Street still handed out candy as safely as possible during Halloween.
