The Quesnel and District Chamber of Commerce is hoping to add a bit of cheer to a pandemic holiday season.

The Chamber is planning a “tour of lights” for Sunday, Dec. 6 from 5-8 p.m. Chamber manager Kathy Somerville said the goal is to add a bit of normalcy to the season and to honour the truckers and workers that make Quesnel tick.

“The truckers and big-rigs are the bread and butter of our community,” she said. “Without them, we would be nowhere.”

Families will drive by West Fraser Timber Park, where trucks and other vehicles will be covered with lights and other seasonal decorations.

“It’s the time right now, because of COVID-19, to do something a little bit different,” Somerville said. “There’s a lot of things cancelled, and people are going to feel it this Christmas … It’s peaceful, and it brings back a little bit of normality.”

Plans for a parade were shut down because of COVID-19, so Somerville made the move to plan what amounts to a reverse-parade.

“People can safely stay in their vehicles, safely drive by and see all these rigs decked out in their lights,” she said. “We’ve got to do whatever we can do right now.”

The Chamber will be collecting donations to help address food security in Quesnel.

“We’ve got some really cool entries,” Somerville said. “I’ve gone through forestry, mining, farming — all those unique and different areas — also tourism.”

The Chamber is still accepting entries. Anyone interested in participating is asked to call 250-992-7262.
