Quesnel Legion Lines

If you read my last column you know a group of us from your local Legion went to Williams Lake for the weekend to a leadership and business workshop conducted by BC/Yukon Command.  Command, for those of you who are unfamiliar and I was one of them, is kind of like the Legion’s head office.

But before I get to some of the highlites of this workshop I need to take care of a little housekeeping.  This is something I should have dealt with from the start.

When I first began writing this column it was only to advertise something special that was coming up at the branch.  I have been very fortunate, thanks to you who read this column, and apparently there are a few of you, I was asked to do it weekly.

I am writing only as a member of the Legion.  I do not pretend to be the ‘voice’ of Branch 94, nor do I speak on behalf of the executive.  I merely write about what I know is happening in and around the Legion.  It is purely for information purposes.  If there are any criticisms, I would be happy to personally discuss these with you and listen to any of your suggestions – which could possibly include to ‘go stuff myself’ – but whatever, I am available to listen.

It’s not my intention to insult anyone or to cause any bad feelings when I single out people for recognition of service.  I can’t possibly know everything or everyone who gives so selflessly and there are many.  What I write is simply my opinion, no one else’s.  I hope this clears up any confusion.

Now back to that workshop – I hope to highlight a few points in each of my future columns.  One of the things that really sticks in my mind is our association with BCAA – who knew that if you registered with BCAA as a Legion or Ladies Auxilary member you were entitled to discounts. We have the registration forms at the local office.  Let me outline some of those benefits for you:

• Membership – waived enrolment fee; 50 per cent off New Associate and 25 per cent off Premium Upgrades

• Home Insurance – 5 per cent discounts, “Legion Value Pack” $220 of coverage for $49.99;

• Travel Medical Insurance – up to 7 per cent Legion Group Discount;

• Advantage Auto Insurance – 5 per cent discount

• access to BCAA member-only individual extended health care and dental insurance; life insurance, long term care, disability and critical illness insurance; pet insurance;

•  you could save up to 50 per cent off services and merchandise at participating BCAA Show Your Card and Save Partners including eyewear, fuel, paint, hotels, cell phones and more at 66,000 retail locations worldwide;

If you want further information on these either call 1-888-268-5154 or go to the website www.bcaa.com/legion.

One more benefit that I think might interest you as a Legion or LA member is our association with The Mortgage Group Canada Inc.  You receive back in cash, 20 per cent of your mortgage and an additional 5 per cent is paid to your local Legion.  So, if you are in the market for a mortgage, why not call for an estimate. It costs you nothing to check it out and may well be worth your time and effort.  They can be reached at 1-800-796-8577 or website www.mortgagegrp.com

Again, don’t forget to tell them you are a member of branch 94.

OK, more benefits to come in future columns.

Legion Week is coming up  June 11 – 18. We plan on having wonderful events throughout the week including bingo, silent auction, BBQ, dessert auction and much more including marshmellow golf, now doesn’t that sound intriguing and fun.  As we firm up some of the events, I’ll give you dates and times, so be sure to read next week’s column.

Sharon MacDonald is a Legion member.
