The Quesnel Outback Quadders Society has secured a $6,000 grant to improve its Deacon Creek trail system.

Quesnel Community Foundation donated the money with $1,800 of the total amount coming from the Holger Bauer fund.

A 2.5-kilometre trail has been approved, which is intended to bypass some wetlands.

“It goes from our current parking lot around a swamp to Kenny Lake,” says club president Norm McNabb. “Right now, there’s an existing trail from Kenny Lake to our old parking lot, but we’re planning on de-activating that.”

This is the second grant the club has received from its benefactors in its three-year history. The first was for $5,000.

“They’ve been really supportive,” says McNabb.

While most of the work, like cutting trees and hauling gravel, will be performed by volunteers, McNabb says the grant money is needed to pay for an excavator, which will be used to clear the trail properly.

Despite being a relatively new all-terrain vehicle (ATV) association, the Outback Quadders are growing at a tremendous rate.

McNabb says they are the second-largest ATV club in B.C.

“Our club was formed in 2016, and we went from 20 members meeting at a restaurant to 240 [paid members] last year.

“We’ve come a long way.”

Recent improvements to their trail system include a new parking lot, new outhouses and diligent upkeep on the trails.

As the snow begins to melt, the club members are all getting excited for the many weekends of muddy fun ahead.

Some riding and maintenance is planned for the May long weekend; a meet n’ greet pig roast, which is open to the general public, is scheduled for June 1 and the club’s annual Poker Run will take place on July 7.

Anyone interested in receiving more information about Outback Quadders memberships can inquire at any of the ATV dealerships, most insurance brokers and the club’s Facebook page.
