Three local students recently won the Child Development Centre’s poster contest for Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder. The awards, given out June 13, were donated by the Quesnel & District Arts and Recreation Centre, Barkerville Historic Town & Park, Cariboo Escape Rooms, Staples and the Friendship Centre.
Kally Lokken, a Grade 8 student, and Shelbi Carter, Grade 9, tied for first place, while Luke Dykhuizen, another Grade 8 student, came second.
The contest was open to students in the eighth and ninth grades in Quesnel and aimed to raise awareness about Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder (FASD). It was Carter’s second year winning a prize in the poster contest.
Penny Sterling, who runs the contest on behalf of the Child Development Centre, says: “If we can help one person [by spreading awareness], that makes a difference.”

The school district was also represented. Dan Lowndes spoke on behalf of School District 28, thanking the students for their participation. “This doesn’t go anywhere without the kids,” he says. “And so the message that we continually talk about is that it really is up to young folks like you to spread that message.”
Parents and family members were also in attendance when the prizes were given out.
The award is given out annually and will be run again next year.
