Quesnel youth Jordan Thompson is attending a three-week basic survival course at the Albert Head Cadet Training Centre, near Victoria, this summer.
Thompson, an air cadet from the 768 Jet Ranger Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron in Quesnel, has been learning skills like how to build a shelter out of tree branches or collect rain water.
The course provides cadets with an opportunity to develop their air-crew survival skills as the cadets participate in activities like field training, fire building, navigation and ground search and rescue.
This is Thompson’s first time at the Albert Head Cadet Training Centre, having only joined cadets last January.

Thompson says the people at training have been “exceptional” and she’s made several new friends. “I’ve really enjoyed being able to learn new skills. The training is really hands on.”
She’s completing the course alongside 52 other youth aged 12-18.
But Thompson isn’t the only Quesnel local at the training centre this summer. According to a Facebook post by the Albert Head Cadets, Gujree Sabberwal is working there as a staff cadet as well. She also says she likes the program for the friends, new and old, that she has met there.
In a press release, Captain Morgan Arnott wrote: “Albert Head strives to foster and encourage team spirit, mutual assistance, comradeship and physical fitness in a safe and fulfilling climate.”
Each summer, approximately 900 course cadets and 70 staff cadets attend the training centre. The training centre offers courses in basic aviation technology and aerospace, music, survival and fitness and sports instructor courses.
Anyone between the ages of 12-18 can be a cadet.
