There was less of the usual ceremony as Quesnel’s 2019 ambassadors gave way to the 2020 group.
The abbreviated ceremony was held at the Aug. 25 meeting of Quesnel city council.
“I think for the young women that we have here, it’s a bit of a relief, because I can’t put you on the spot, and make you give speeches and all that,” Quesnel Mayor Bob Simpson quipped.
Nalyssa Runge, Hailey Murray and Sydney Williams were honoured as outgoing ambassadors.
“[Council] thinks this is a vital program in our community,” Simpson said. “Not only from the candidate process, and the internal dynamic, and the growth that each of you get to participate in as a candidate and as an ambassador, but also the contribution to our community.”
Sarah Foottit, Beth Mattioli and Jadacia Barker will take up the mantle for the coming year. They’ve already started attending events in the community, including singing Oh Canada, and opening up the Quesnel and District 4-H Auction on Aug. 23.

“Hopefully one day you’ll be sitting inside the horseshoe,” Simpson said, referring to the desks that city council sit behind. “We need that youth and vitality and sense of service to serve the community in elected positions.”
Ambassadors represent Quesnel at a wide variety of local events and events across the province for a year after being crowned in a competition that includes speeches and interviews.
