Savannah Robinson braved freezing temperatures and fresh snow on the trails as she embarked on a 24-hour ski at Hallis Lake near Quesnel, B.C. to help raise funds for jerseys for athletes from the club who compete in skiing and biathlon.
Throughout the day, starting at 5 p.m. Jan. 31 and ending 5 p.m. Feb. 1, Robinson had support from athletes, family and members of the club who cheered her on, joined her on the trail and made her hot chocolate so she could warm up a bit.
She had stretches in the middle of the night where she went through trails alone. But, she said it was easier than she was expecting.
"All I had to do for 24 hours was ski, eat and use the bathroom. Life was really good," she joked after getting out of the cold. "I had so much support. So many people were filling in the blanks and doing things, even just making hot chocolate when I felt like I couldn't move when I came in to warm up. It just made everything really easy."
She hit every trail at Hallis as part of the ski, going to another short trail after she was officially finished to include it as well.
"We were out skiing, it was like 2 a.m. and we just got into and stars just started to show and it was cloudy and snowing all night and it was still snowing at that point but stars were showing. It was so cool," she said was one of her highlights. As for low lights, "I had to climb up the really long hill on South Loop and I avoid it at all costs and I hated every second of that."
Around $4,000 was raised to go towards the jerseys, nearly doubling the goal set. Extra funds will go to support the club and its athletes.
"Get outside and do stuff," Robinson recommended. "Push your boundaries. Because I think we can all be a little bit more surprised over what we can accomplish if we just remove the boundaries."
