A little-known art gallery in downtown Quesnel is excited to feature the works of locally well-known and emerging artists, many of which will be for sale next month.
Spirit Square Studios is preparing for their upcoming show “Spring Fling,” which will open Monday, May 2.
The gallery and studio is located upstairs on Reid Street beside The Space Above and Books and Company. It was launched about a year ago by Maureen Wheeler.
“It started out as a place for people to provide workshops,” said Patti Faber, who operates Blue Bird Studio.
“Then we started to rent individual studios, and as we got to know each other, Maureen really is the person who founded Spirit Square Studios and we participate with her.”
Wheeler recalled visiting her sister in Vancouver, where she has a studio nestled in a historic warehouse space at Parker Art Salon.
The Parker Art Salon, according to its website, was formed in 2015 when a group of artists with studios in 1000 Parker Street met one evening and decided to do a salon-style exhibition in 1000 Parker Street studios.
“I got totally inspired and thought we could do this in Quesnel,” Wheeler said.
“So that’s kind of what this is—a small version of that but a collection of artists who all have a place just to lay their work and hopefully get the community up here.”
Spirit Square Studios is open most days from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
