The District of Wells is celebrating its 20th anniversary as a municipality on the weekend of June 9.

There will be a drive-in movie at the Wells Ball Diamond on Friday, June 8, where they’ll be playing The Blues Brothers on an inflatable, three-storey high movie screen. The movie will start at dusk, or around 9:30 p.m. Wylie Bystedt, the economic development officer for the District of Wells, says the event is free, and she encourages people in Wells, as well as the surrounding regions, to attend.

On Saturday, local businesses will be offering special deals and activities for those in the town, while on Sunday, Wells will be hosting a car show.

The Show and Shine car show, in partnership with Quesnel’s Prospectors Car Club, will take place on Sanders Avenue and Pooley Street in Wells, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Berstedt says the car club will be there with a number of cars, and she hopes that cars from other communities will also come.

Awards will be given out to the best car from each decade (from the 30s through to the 70s), as well as a Mayor’s Choice award.

“To be able to have vehicles from those early days in front of buildings that were built at the same time as these older cars… it’ll give us a chance to recreate some of those old photos,” says Bystedt.

She says the event is a way to mix old and new, because although they’ve only been a municipality for 20 years, some of the buildings in Wells are more than 75 years old.

An anniversary cake will be served in front of the district office in Wells at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
