Barkerville Historic Town and Park was alive with seniors and their mobility scooters, power wheelchairs and walkers on Sept. 5, when the Rotary Club of Quesnel once again sponsored the popular Seniors’ Expedition to Barkerville. Of course, the rest of us just walked.
This year was the 56th annual expedition. There were 102 seniors on two buses, plus 21 residents and staff of Dunrovin on two more buses, plus six Rotarians. The Dunrovin buses carried the mobility equipment that so many of the people required. How wonderful it is when these people are bustling around with big smiles enjoying the town.
What a relaxing day! The bus ride to Barkerville was followed by a sponsored lunch at one of the three restaurants there and a sponsored show at Mrs. McGinley’s Gold Rush Variety Show at Theatre Royal. We had lots of time to poke around at favourite shops and exhibits. The sourdough bread was sold out and probably all the ice cream in town as well!
There was an extra bit of fun during the Variety Show when the professionals got two Quesnel City Councillors, Ron Paull and Laurey-Anne Roodenburg, along with a Dunrovin employee, on stage with them to do a comedy act. They certainly were funny!
At the end of the day, all 130 of us posed for a group picture.
The Rotary Club sponsors the event, which is funded primarily by a grant from the Province of B.C.’s Gaming Fund.
