Wells Works showcases local artists to kick off 2022 for Island Mountain Arts

The annual show is a chance for locals to show off what they’ve been working on throughout the year

Elyssia Sasaki thinks its a great time to get out and see Wells, no matter the weather.

The executive artistic director of Island Mountain Arts isn’t just talking about cross country skiing and other winter activities in the district, but the local artists on display inside the gallery.

Island Mountain Arts is currently presenting Wells Works, a collection of art by locals to the Wells/Barkerville/Bowron area, put on display over the holiday season. The show has run annually since the mid-90s.

“It’s always really exciting to see who comes out and what people are working on as well in the region,” Sasaki said.

“I think that often we think a lot about landscape paintings and stuff like that out here because it’s just so beautiful and the medium makes a lot of sense, but there are people who do amazing handi-craft work, embroidery, folks who are doing really awesome digital illustrations.”

Sasaki said one of her favourite pieces from this year’s exhibit was a collection from the Barkerville Printing Press project.

“It’s always really cathartic to see a show at the end of the year that has your neighbours, and has people that you know in it in multiple different capacities in town,” she said.

“People’s talents just have such a range.”

This year’s show includes works from Amanda Preston, Barry Curtis, Ben Blanchard, Caroline Anders, Connor Kenney, Dannette Boucher, Dirk Van Stralen, Ella Kay, Ellen Partnoy, Jeffery Wannop, Jillian Merrick, Lindsay Kay, Natasha Lepine and more.

Wells Works will be on display until the end of January. The Island Mountain Arts gallery is open from Thursday to Sunday from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m.
