A popular stop on the rounds of activities at last year’s Winter Carnival was the fire pit for marshmallows and bannock on a stick.

The City of Quesnel is hosting the Quesnel Winter Carnival, Feb. 5, West Fraser Timber Park, 1 – 5:30 p.m., to celebrate winter and encourage active living through cold-weather sports.

Come out and cross country ski, snowshoe and skate – borrow ours if you don’t have your own.

Join in hands-on arts activities. Enjoy making prints, snow sculptures, snow paintings and fabric art with talented local artists.  The Quesnel and District Community Arts Council’s contribution this year has greatly expanded the arts aspect of the Carnival.

Enter the Crazy Toque contest. Bring your favorite toque from home – limited quantities will also be for sale at the event.

New this year is an Adult Winter Fun Challenge.

The Challenge encourages adults to be active and get reacquainted with or learn about winter sports they may not have ever tried – or haven’t tried in a long time. The Quesnel Winter Carnival is a way to be active with family and friends, stay healthy and have fun.

Outdoor winter sports are a great way to enjoy nature all year round and get a great workout and an amazing stress release. A bonus is that exercising in the cold is a great way to lose weight since we burn more calories staying warm in winter.

Snowshoeing is easy to learn, and burns about 500 calories an hour – which can be twice as many calories as walking and about the same as running and racquetball. It’s also an inexpensive sport.

And, if you haven’t tried it in a while, you may be surprised to know that technology has made modern snowshoes skinnier and less awkward than classic models. Come out and try our snowshoes.

Cross country skiing and skating burn similar calories to snowshoeing and both involve a great gliding feeling that we’re fortunate

to experience in Canada.

Enthusiasts from both the Hallis Lake Ski Touring Club and the Quesnel Figure Skating Club will be ready at the Carnival to fit you with equipment and, if you need it, give you some reminders or teach you how to try their sport for the first time.

Enter the casual challenge by completing three of five winter activities – skating, cross country skiing, snowshoeing and tobogganing.  The fifth activity is talking with the first year nursing students about health, activity, or wellness.

Adults who complete three of the five events will be entered into a draw for prizes from local organizations and businesses.

The afternoon caps off with fireworks.
