On Nov. 2 around 4:30 p.m. Quesnel RCMP received several calls warning them that a man had climbed over the railing of the Quesnel River Bridge and was attempting to jump into the Quesnel River below. Quesnel RCMP and North District Traffic Service members from Prince George attended the scene, shutting down traffic across the bridge.

The man was suffering from severe emotional distress. Despite the efforts of the officers, he could not be coaxed from the ledge of the bridge. Aware that the jump into the cold, swift moving river would likely result in the man’s death, officers had to physically restrain the man after they managed to approach him, pulling him safely back over the railing.

The man was apprehended under the Mental Health Act and transported to GR Baker Memorial Hospital to receive treatment.

Neither the man nor the officers were physically injured.
